Oh Boy! Oh Boy!

Q got a splinter.
It has been quite the week!  Today is bittersweet, my Mom, Dad, sis & brother-in-law, all got on planes this morning leaving Vegas. (Carol will soon too!)  My parents were here for a week and my sis and BIL for the weekend.  I loved loved loved having them here with us.  We don't get to see each other often, so it was an especially wonderful treat. That was the sweet part. The bitter part is now that they're gone, I'm feeling particularly lonely.

Quintin and I also were able to find out this week that our little bundle of joy is actually a GIRL! We had a get together while my family was in town to reveal the gender - though we could have found out weeks ago.   A sealed envelope from the ultrasound that revealed the gender sat around our house calling for us to open it- It was hard not to peek! My friend came to pick it up and made a pink cake covered in frosting and when we cut into it - we were quite surprised - we were both so sure it was a boy!  Little baby girl is doing well as far as we know, and growing right on schedule!! We've decided to keep calling her Poppi for now since we pretty much only have boys names picked out.  She'll be due right around Independence Day, I have never been more excited for the holiday as I am now. Just a little over 4 months from now, I'll have our sweet little baby in my arms. Ahh, I don't see how I can possibly wait that much longer! We were both VERY happy that she is doing so well in there.
My job/school situation isn't working out quite like I thought it would, but if there's anything marriage has taught me, it's that the best way to live life is roll with the punches, and not try too hard to control the outcome of everything you deal with. I know things will work out the way they are meant to, and I keep telling myself that I can only do as much as I can do. No reason to stress the small stuff, right? In every aspect of life, Quintin is so encouraging and loving, he's my number one fan :) Which works out well, as I try hard to be his own personal cheerleader. I love our relationship, I think we balance each other so well, it's almost perfection.

When my family was here we drove down to the Grand Canyon Friday morning and returned Saturday evening.  There was snow and fresh air! It was a fun short trip.  There may be pictures of that later...
GIRL GIRL GIRL GIRL GIRL GIRL!
Now accepting name suggestions!  :)

A story of self betrayal

Last year we read The Anatomy of Peace in one of our basic MFT classes. Not only has it been a book that has been a foundation of how I do therapy, it also changed my life. It's also a pretty easy read. I highly recommend it.

The basic premise is that when we fight with others we treat them as objects. Either as a tool to help us achieve something or a means to an end. It sucks to feel used.

When we view and treat others a people we fight less. We see them as people with desires, wants, needs, and even feelings. Viewing people as people it is basically impossible to take advantage of them.

While this is good an all, my favorite part of the book is the concept of self-betrayal. The premise is that there something inside of us that gives us ideas--call it a conscience, the spirit of God, intuition. I truly do believe that such a thing exists. Self-betrayal is when you act contrary to how you feel that you should; when you do not obey this voice or thought inside of you is talking (sometimes screaming at you).

When I was a missionary in Romania one of my first companions and I were walking to an appointment that never actually let us in. It sucked to walk all the way across town and find an address and then not even be let in the door--or even the curtsey of being spoken to. I had a feeling that we should stick around the area and knock on the surrounding doors and suggested it to my companion, but he made fun of me and shrugged it off like it was a terrible idea. That was the last time I shared a feeling with him or any companion. Every time I didn't share a feeling, I betrayed myself. And it hurt. I regret it. Most likely there would have been no "golden contact" behind any of those doors--but I would have been at peace with myself. Instead I have been betraying myself...and each time it became easier and easier to do.

While training to be a therapist (and before that as a foreman at a rafting company) I have become very forward. I say things that I feel need to be said. Sometimes they are abrasive, sometimes they are hard to hear and hard to say. I don't lie about them. However, when it has come to feelings of a spiritual nature--I have continued to betray myself. Because I am scared.

Tonight while talking with a guy who has become a great friend in my cohort here in Las Vegas, I had one of these feelings again. He shared his feelings/desires for this calling as a family therapist to be a much greater calling than just helping a few families, perhaps to change the way our culture discusses sex and hurt and relationships entirely. I share his thoughts that there is such a need, and that I have often felt that there is a greater calling. But I'm scared to expect it to be anything more than just helping one person. I'm scared to admit I feel that the calling is much greater. While he spoke to me of his desire and feelings that this "chance" meeting of therapists in our program may not just be chance, I felt a familiar feeling. One that I have often shrugged off.

I almost shrugged it off again and betrayed myself like I have done so many times before--but not this time. I shared my fears and shared something along the lines of, "I feel what you are saying is true. I believe in what you are saying, I believe in you." My friend grabbed me in a bear hug and we cried together. It was unexpected, but the feeling was powerful. I am scared to admit that I feel this job of being a family therapist will help to change my friends, family, and maybe even our religion--but I feel that it is true.

This is my story of finally learning to stop betraying myself.

As a post-script to this. I always anticipated that I would marry an amazing girl. I was never interested in anything less. I feel I got that with Molly. However, I did not anticipate that she would be so amazing that her love would help to heal me to drastically, and that she would transform me from a college dropout into a Master's student at/near the top of my class. She is more amazing than I every could have imagined. I know that it is difficult for her (and me) to be gone such long hours at school--but I am so glad that I have such a loving, support, beautiful, caring, and good wife to love and support me. I could not do it without her. I am so happy to have her on my team while raising our baby!

Barefoot and...

...raging mad!

I am sure when this baby comes out I will look back on all the things that get me so fired up and laugh... right? Or is this permanent?

So lately I have noticed I am irritable in excess.  Some things have always bothered me - like the cat coming in to wake us up at 4 a.m. I usually just feed her and grumble about how much I hate her, but recently I have been a little more harsh (mostly in language- but sometimes in the manner in which I pet her).

Other things are totally new annoyances. Like when my aunt swishes water in her mouth. I don't know if this is new - or if I just started noticing it.  When she starts it before bed I have to leave until she is done.  It just takes so long!

This morning's grapefruit really set me off.  I went to cut it in half and could only find a short knife also the cutting board was NO WHERE to be found! I looked high and low. Meanwhile G was calling my name - I'd call back "just a minute" of course she could not hear, so she continued calling me.  I just needed to hurry and cut this stupid grapefruit and I could bring it to her and then see what she needed. Kept calling me. "just a minute!" I said again  -Oh there was the cutting board- located in its usual place. I tried cutting it will my jr. knife, it was not sufficient so I got the bigger knife out and finished it off.  She called for me again. Then one half of the jagged juicy grapefruit rolled into the sink into a sprinkling of cinnamon sugar! ARGH GROSS! G called again ( this was all in a matter of like 90 seconds so don't think she was being neglected ) So now I am flustered and FURIOUS and leave the grapefruit to sit in the filth to which it rolled (it's own choice) and go see what she wanted.  -Oh she just wanted me to know that she was ready for her grapefruit...  AHHHHHHH  (I did give her the one that didn't roll into the sink just FYI.  The one in the sink I imagined throwing over the wall into the street and watching it get run over by trucks, but in real life Q made me rinse it off.)

Well I thought I was maybe getting "caregiver burn out" cause I have been here for a long time and though G doesn't need much help - it is still draining all day everyday.  The only symptoms I had were irritability and constant fatigue.

Another thought I had was maybe I need to go to the gym and sweat more.  I have been going pretty much everyday for the last 2 weeks (cause 12x = $20 discount, and of course I went the last 12 days of the month) but I haven't really been working hard like I used to.

So I went to the source of all knowledge and googled "anger and pregnant" and apparently thats a thing too*. Which makes me feel at least a little better.  Quintin probably won't be too excited though.

This is not a good picture and it was a couple weeks ago, but I can't make a post with out a pic.

This was probably at 17 weeks.  Some days I look pregnant other days I just look chunky.
I think I am up about 8 lbs.

*the other day I googled "unmotivated and lazy and pregnant" -also pretty common I guess.
